Starting in 2014 and beyond, in order to receive Basic STAR exemption in New York State, new legislation is requiring all New York Homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYS Tax Department) in order to receive the exemption going forward.
The NYS Tax Department has started mailing letters with STAR codes to all Basic STAR recipients. This code is required to register for the Basic STAR tax exemption.
Check out this short video about how to register for Basic STAR exemption from the NYS Tax Department:
The Registration period started on August 19, 2013 and continues through December 31, 2013. For more information visit The NYS Tax Department or click directly on this link to be taken to the STAR Registration Program: http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/
What is STAR?
STAR is a New York State tax relief program that lowers your school property taxes. If your income is less than $500,000, you're probably entitled to this generous benefit.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible, you must own and live at your primary residence. There are two levels of benefits – Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.
*STAR exemptions may change from year to year; these figures are as of June 2013 from the NYS Tax Department website. STAR Registration applies to Basic STAR exemptions for 2014 and beyond; it doesn't impact 2013 exemptions. Homeowners will not have to re-register every year - based on the information provided in the registration process, the Tax Department will monitor homeowners' eligibility in future years.
