Part 100 Regulations for the Visual Arts
The Facts


   Part 100.3 of the New York State Regulations mandate the teaching of art in grades K-6. The Education Department recommends the following time allocations for art. In grades 1-3, at least 10% of the weekly time spent in school should be allocated to art. In grades 4-6, at least 5% of the weekly time spent in school should be allocated to art. It is recommended that a certified art teacher provide the regular instructional program in art.

    Part 100.4 of the New York State Regulations mandate the teaching of 1/2 unit of study in art in grades 7 and 8. The Education Department recommends that students receive sequential instruction in art for 10 weeks in grade 7, and an additional 10 weeks in grade 8. A certified art teacher is required to provide the regular instructional program in art.

    Part 100.5 of the New York State Regulations mandate that all students graduating from high school in New York State earn a full unit of credit in the arts for graduation. All high schools are required to provide the opportunity for students to earn a three unit sequence in art. Over 400 high schools in New York State provide the opportunity for students to earn a 5 unit sequence in art. A certified art teacher is required to provide the regular instructional program in art.
