A letter to parents regarding QMS schedules; reopening

Dear QMS Students and Parents:

Our district has released reopening plans for the 2020-2021 school year, and we will be following CDC, DOH and NYSED guidelines for instructing students on campus. The health and safety of all students and staff remains our highest priority.

We are looking forward to having our 6th graders attend daily in-person instruction, and having our 7th and 8th graders engage in a hybrid schedule with every-other-day in-person instruction.

Families may also choose a full remote (virtual) learning option.  When students are not physically in school, they will be connected to their class in remotely via Chromebooks.  Students and teachers will utilize Google Classroom and Google Meets to achieve this goal.

6th Grade Schedule

Grade 6 students will attend daily, and will remain mostly in cohort classes, with teachers rotating as much as possible.  Some student rotations may be necessary during the school day in order for our students to have an optimal 6th grade experience (ie PE and other electives).

Grade 7 and 8 Hybrid Schedule

Each grade level (cohort) will be divided alphabetically, so that our 7th and 8th grade cohorts will be at half capacity on any given day.  We will have Group 1 (last name alphabet A-K) and Group 2 (last name alphabet L-Z).  The hybrid schedule rotation will be A1A2, B1B2, C1C2, D1D2, etc. to maximize in-person instruction.  All students will be expected to follow their daily schedule, both in-person and remotely via Google Meet.  Teachers will be taking attendance every block.

Remote Schedule

The same guidelines will be in place for students who have chosen the full remote (virtual) option.  Every lesson will be accessed by the student via Google Meet.  Students will be able to interact and ask questions utilizing the Google Meet features and other engaging technology.  Although hands-on activities will be limited with the full, remote option, students will have access to demonstrations, simulations, and observations.  Once extracurricular activities and interscholastic athletics are permitted to begin, students choosing the full remote option will be allowed to participate.

More information

  • Individual student schedules will be made available on SchoolTool prior to the first day of school.
  • All students and staff will be required to wear face coverings and maintain six feet of physical distancing throughout the day.  Daily health screenings will also be required. The district is working to develop an APP that will expedite this process.  More details will be made available to families once finalized.
  • Orientation programs (Open Doors, Start at the Middle, New Student/family Orientation) are still being developed.  Information will be communicated via School Messenger once finalized.

Virtual forum set for Aug. 19

We are excited to host a Virtual Forum on Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 7:15-8:15 p.m.  This will be an opportunity for us to provide more details about our plans and to address further questions.  More details were sent out earlier this week via email (School Messenger) including the link to the forum and Google Form to submit questions.

Snack Pack program

We are pleased to share with you that QMS will continue the weekend Snack Pack program. Starting on Sept. 24, a combined effort among the QUFSD PTAs, QMS Student Ambassadors, and generous donations will be providing free Snack Packs for participating students.  The program is an effort to provide food over the weekend to students in need.  These Snack Packs will be filled with healthy, non-perishable food items.  Please discuss this program with your child. It will be the child’s responsibility to pick up the Snack Pack on Thursdays or Fridays from the Guidance Office. Parents, please – only sign your child up to receive a Snack Pack if he/she is willing to be responsible for the weekly pick-up.

School supply lists

Lastly, here are the supply lists for grades 6-8.  They are also posted under the QMS news on our website.

Please visit our new website frequently for updates.  Additional information will be shared as opening day approaches via SchoolMessenger emails as well.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Be Well,

Mr. Michael Brannigan, QMS Principal

Ms. Tiffany Montgomery, QMS Asst. Principal
