A Joint Statement from James Dexter, WSWHE BOCES District Superintendent of Schools and Kyle Gannon, Superintendent Queensbury Union Free School District
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office arrested Thomas C. Dean, a Saratoga County man, today, May 5, 2022, on multiple charges after he unlawfully presented himself as a substitute Registered Nurse (RN) at the Queensbury Union Free School District.
He tried to serve as a substitute registered nurse by presenting false credentials, but alert Queensbury staff members realized he was presenting fake documentation. At no time did he work as a nurse with students.
The individual was an approved teacher/paraprofessional substitute, said James Dexter, District Superintendent of Schools, WSWHE BOCES. The individual’s fingerprints were cleared by the New York State Education Department on February 25 and his first time working as a substitute for WSWHE BOCES was March 31 at the F. Donald Myers Education Center. His first substitute assignment in Queensbury was April 5 and has been limited to the middle and high schools.
“Between our two organizations we picked up on it,” said James Dexter. “The system worked. Something didn’t sound right or feel right.”
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office was immediately notified, and both WSWHE BOCES and QUFSD officials have been cooperating with their investigation. School districts in the region were also notified.
“I could not be more impressed by the due diligence and alertness of our staff who quickly identified the false information and ensured the safety of our students,” said Queensbury Superintendent Kyle Gannon. “It is important that we continue to work together to keep our students and staff safe.”
The individual was immediately revoked from the substitute list and reported to the New York State Education Department and the Office of the Professions. Both QUFSD and WSWHE BOCES want to thank the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for its immediate response in addressing this situation.
