Grades K-5 Summer Academy

  • A kindergartner works on an assignment Summertime will be fun and educational for students enrolled in the Queensbury Summer Academy for students entering grades K-5!
The K-5 academy is a six-week, half-day program that blends academic instruction, character education, enrichment activities, field trips and more. It is designed to help students maintain and expand on the academic, social and emotional progress they made in the prior school year. Students will also receive free breakfast and bagged lunches to encourage healthy eating habits during the summer.
During summer 2019, enrolled students will attend the academy from 8 a.m. to noon on July 8 - August 8, with no classes on Fridays.
    School Day
Students in grades K-5 will spend their time in self-contained classrooms, getting to know an individual teacher and their classmates each day. A typical day will include the following three elements:
Academic instruction will focus on literacy and math concepts appropriate for each grade level. Students will explore concepts introduced in the prior school year in order to increase their comprehension and proficiency before moving onto the next grade level. They will also preview some of the standards for the following school year.
    Spartans CARE
Students will see why Queensbury Spartans CARE by exploring grade-level appropriate content developed with the Warren County Council of Prevention and focused on:
    • Conflict resolution
    • Anger management
    • Respect for self and others
    • Effective communication
At the academy, daily enrichment activities will provide students with opportunities to be creative and to further explore educational topics with hands-on projects. Some activities may involve going outdoors, so children should wear weather-appropriate clothing. Students will participate in art, physical education and LEGO robotics.
    Field Trips
Students will go on at least two field trips during the summer to the Crandall Public Library, a literary jewel in the heart of downtown Glens Falls. Parents are asked to ensure their child has a library card before the start of the summer program. If your child does not yet have a library card, click here to download an application (PDF). Completed applications can be turned in at the library or to your child’s school counselor upon enrollment in the K-5 summer program.
    Attendance in the Summer
Good attendance will help students receive the maximum benefit of this fun-filled learning experience. They may also earn an end-of-summer reward! If you have prior knowledge of family commitments during the academy period, please inform the assistant principal of your child’s school.
    Transportation in the Summer
Transportation is provided by Queensbury Union Free School District. Students are picked up at designated bus stops, and parents are notified of their child’s anticipated pick-up and drop-off times after enrollment.
