School cafeterias offer new, fresh dining options in 2018-19

Queensbury Union Free School District and food service contractor Aramark have launched a farm-to-lunch table initiative with more scratch-made menu items prepared by a chef in a school cafeteria. The result is a plan for tastier, healthier meals that offer quality dining options to students at the low cost of $1 for breakfast, $2 for lunch in grades K-5 and $2.15 for lunch in grades 6-12.
“Healthy, nutritious food eaten on a daily basis leads to better learning outcomes for students, and I’m very pleased we can offer this option to our families," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Douglas W. Huntley. "This plan also supports our state’s farmers."
He and other administrative leaders sampled the new menu during a live food demonstration and tasting event held this summer inside the kitchen and cafeteria of Queensbury Middle School.
“I think it’s going to be great," said QMS Principal Michael Brannigan, after sampling a plate of Caribbean jerk chicken, lime rice and mixed vegetables. "Having kids myself, I know when they see colors, smells and different flavors coming together, it’s an exciting, new experience for them."
The new menu for school meals was developed by Queensbury Food Services Director Joshua Hodge, who represents Aramark on campus, following requirements set by the district for food quality, taste, source and cost.
“We want to serve food that kids want," said Hodge. "High school and middle school students especially like options, and a lot of them like made-to-order food."
