Montgomery’s state championships highlight successful winter sports season
It was an exciting winter sports season for our teams and athletes! Here are some of the highlights:
Overall: This winter, 44 students participated in the NYSPHSAA championships, bringing the total on the school year to 67. Six teams earned scholar-athlete status - boys’ alpine ski, boys’ nordic ski, boys’ swimming and diving, girls’ basketball, girls’ alpine ski and girls’ nordic ski. Additionally, 82 individuals earned scholar-athlete status this winter.
Montgomery’s state titles and other Alpine Skiing success: Hunter Montgomery capped off an incredible season winning two NYSPHSAA championships in slalom and giant slalom. Maddie Montgomery placed third in the state in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom. Meredith Montgomery placed sixteenth in the state in the slalom.
Nordic Skiing: The boys’ team won a Section 2 championship where five individuals placed in the top ten. Lucas Jenkins (1st), Aidan Rowley (3rd), Nick Logan (5th), Teddy Borgos (7th) and Sam Rowley (8th) all qualified to participate in the NYSPHSAA championships. At the state competition, Lucas Jenkins finished in 8th place.
Three girls qualified for the NYSPHSAA championships. At Sectionals, Bailey Gengel placed 2nd, Brittany Barton placed 8th and Lorraina Guay placed 10th. At the state competition, Bailey Gengel placed 4th.
Queensbury had a top 10 finisher in all four ski races!
Ice Hockey: The ice hockey team won the Section 2 and Regional Championships. The team defeated John Jay Crossriver in the state semifinals before falling to Skaneateles in the state championship game. Although the team didn’t win the championship, they finished second in Division 2 in NYS.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving: The boys’ swimming and diving team won the Foothills Council Championship and placed third at the Section 2 meet. Four swimmers, David Walton, Zac Brown, Ross Ciamano and TJ Bearor. At the NYSPHSAA championships, David placed fourth in the 200m individual medley and fifth in the 100m backstroke.
History on the wrestling mat: The wrestling team won the Foothills Council Championship. Twin brothers Dylan and Ryan Sleezer competed against each other in the Section 2 championship and qualified to participate in the NYSPHSAA championships (in the same weight class). Dylan beat Ryan to win the Section 2 championship. This was the first time in Section 2 history that twin brothers competed against each other in the Section 2 championship and qualified for states.
Girls’ Basketball: The girls’ basketball team had a great season, finishing with a 21-2 record after falling to Averill Park in the Section 2 championship.
