QMS Character Education Committee opens Kindness Closet
On Monday, December 3, the QMS Character Education Committee held a ribbon cutting for “The Hanger”, a kindness closet with clothing and toiletry items available to students.
The closet was a culmination of hard work by members of the Character Education Committee. The committee wanted to create a space where students could access items they needed. "The Hanger" is located in the office space off of the media center.
Middle school students were encouraged to design a logo for the new space. Eighth grader Ryan Tuomela won the logo contest and art teacher Amy VanVranken helped Ryan paint the logo over “The Hanger” doorway.
“The idea behind the closet is to get resources to people who need them,” said Character Education Committee member Susan Cunningham. “Our school is working on a positive, inclusive atmosphere and this is one way we feel we’ll help students feel good about themselves and help families in our community.”
Cunningham launched a campaign on DonorsChoose to obtain funds for clothing racks and storage items.
The committee plans to visit other school districts with kindness closets for ideas to enhance its space.
“It has been inspiring to watch this vision come to life,” said QMS assistant principal Robyn Scotland. “The Hanger” is another way that our teachers and staff have come together to meet the needs of all of our QMS students.”
“The Hanger” is collecting donations of gently-used clothing, accessories and unused toiletries. If you have anything you would like to donate, items can be dropped off at QMS.
