Sixty-five Queensbury juniors became the newest members of the National Honor Society during a ceremony on Wednesday, March 18.
These students will join the current members of the Queensbury chapter of the National Honor Society.
To be considered, students must achieve a grade point average for the first five semesters of high school of 89.5 or higher while challenging themselves with rigorous coursework. They also have to be active participants in both the school and community. When faculty members evaluate applications, they consider academic accomplishments, leadership, character and service backgrounds of each student.
Queensbury High School Principal Andrew Snide equated the excitement of Honor Society inductions with March Madness.
“In March Madness, every team starts with potential, but not every team advances,” Snide said. “To move forward, it takes preparation, discipline, teamwork, grit and the ability to perform when it matters the most. Does that sound familiar? Because those are the exact qualities that define the students being inducted tonight.”
Superintendent of Schools Kyle Gannon thanked the families and teachers who supported the students along the way.
This evening, we recognize more than grades and achievements,” Gannon said. “We honor the character, determination, and positive influence these students bring to their school and community. They have set an example through their actions, showing what it means to strive for excellence in all areas of life.
During the ceremony, members of the String Orchestra played Mozart’s “No. 1” and senior members of the Madrigal Singers performed “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
Vice President Hannah Scherer presented the Award for Leadership to history teacher Christopher Estremera. Secretary Faith Lawani presented the Award for Character to physical education teacher Diana Karandy. Treasurer Tristan Lane presented the Award for Service to retiring history teacher and Honor Society advisor Maureen Bailey. President Peyton Conway presented the Award for Scholarship to French teacher Meghan Chance.
At the close of the ceremony, Snide presented the Principal’s Leadership Award to senior Mia Afsar-Keshmiri, who is a full International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, treasurer of Student Senate, president of Key Club, president of the “Seeing Blue” literary art magazine, member of Math Club, Spanish Honor Society, World Language Club and is on both the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams.
“Mia is an outstanding student both in and outside of the classroom,” Snide said. “She is an extremely conscientious student who continually demonstrates the drive and desire to excel among the finest.”
