Queensbury fourth grader Emery Leo raised money by returning 4,400 bottles and cans and used that money to benefit students in need. On Friday, Oct. 24, Emery, 9, pulled a wagon of wellness bags around campus and delivered them to the nurses at each school building.
Emery purchased the items as well as the bags to put them in. She even decorated each bag with stickers.
She made bags for boys containing body wipes, tissues, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant. The bags for girls contained a hairbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, Chapstick, deodorant, tissues and a bar of soap. She threw in some pieces of candy as well.
“I was thinking of other kids that might maybe need help at home to go to school and not be worried about how they look and how they feel at school,” said Emery, who asked her friend Elliana O'Loughlin to help her deliver the kits.
Emery is continuing to collect “Cans for a Cause” and hopes to make another donation in the future.
“Emery’s kindness reminds us that our students don’t just learn here, they lead here,” said Jason Blackman, school counselor. “Her compassion sets a beautiful example for all of us.”
