The Queensbury Middle School cafeteria was filled with the sights and sounds of France on May 28 as 20 current and aspiring French students gathered for a special Paint and Snack event.
Guided by QMS art teacher Amy Van Vranken, students explored both French culture and visual arts by creating an Impressionist-inspired painting of the Eiffel Tower, influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh. As they experimented with color, texture, and personal expression, each student brought the scene to life in a unique way while discovering the beauty of their own creativity.
While painting, students enjoyed a variety of snacks as well as French-inspired sparkling waters and sodas. Although students worked from an inspirational reference image, they were encouraged to incorporate their own creativity and artistic interpretation throughout the process.
āThe event was an overwhelming success, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore French culture through art in a fun and engaging setting,ā Van Vranken said.
They hope to make this event an annual tradition at the middle school, she added.
āThis engaging experience blended world languages and visual arts, demonstrating how interdisciplinary learning can deepen cultural understanding and enhance student engagement,ā said French teacher Julie Totaro. āBy connecting artistic styles associated with France to their study of the French language and culture, students developed a greater appreciation for the products, practices and perspectives of the French-speaking world.ā
The event also supported the New York State Learning Standards for world languages and the arts by fostering intercultural competence, creative expression, critical thinking, and communication skills, making learning both meaningful and memorable.
