Queensbury fifth grader Gabriel Sovay won the annual William H. Barton Intermediate School Spelling Bee, and his classmates from Mrs. Single’s class chanted “Gabe, Gabe, Gabe” as they gathered around him to celebrate his victory.
The fifth grader clinched his win by correctly spelling the word “microscope.” He was one of 19 fourth- and fifth-grade students to compete in the annual event on Friday, May 16.
For the first time in WHBI Spelling Bee history, four students were named runners up. Those students included: Ian Acquah, Jaxon Gourd, Jackson Guise and Eloise Walajtys.
Other students who competed in the Spelling Bee include: Myla Wilson, Adaline Hunsinger, Maddy Gabris, Lizzie Parker, Celia Cimo, Rowan Gazaille, Jayde Lee, Maxwell Lynch, Gunnar Beard, Charlotte Killingsworth, Claira Olson-Laake, Ellie McNamee, Elizabeth McCullen and Emmitt Bryant.
