The Queensbury varsity boys track and field team captured its 18th overall sectional title and first since 2017 with a first-place showing in the Section 2 Group 2 championships at Averill Park High School (complete results) on Wednesday, May 28.
Ninth-grader Pavel Ford recorded a personal-best time of 15.71 seconds to capture the 110-meter hurdles event, while senior Liam Davidson topped all 3000-meter steeplechase participants and was the runner-up in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter events to help the Spartans post 133.7 points.
The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Josh Jenkin, Brett Carr, Andrew Murray and Nick Gileski earned a first-place medal. Justice Affinito and Gileski placed second in the 100- and 800-meter sprints, respectively. Also achieving runner-up status were Alden Guay (steeplechase) and Lucian Augusta (pole vault).
In the pentathlon, Alex Goertzen (second place with 2,334 points) and Adam Spero (third, 1,904) both eclipsed their previous career-high totals.
Third-place performances included Kiernan Davidson (3200 meters), Patrick Eppedico-Cirillo (steeplechase) and Parker Thompson (pole vault).
Personal records were attained by Affinito (23.09 seconds in the 200 meters), Guay (10:27.52, steeplechase) and Eppedico-Cirillo (10:32.58, steeplechase).
The QHS varsity girls track and field squad concluded the day in the sixth spot (complete results). Brooke Anderson took second in the high jump and fifth in the shot put, while Julia Ross (personal-best time of 12.58 seconds) placed third in the 100 meters.
Fourth-place showings featured Lola Leonard (discus), Adrianna Lum (personal-best time of 17.15 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles) and the following relay teams: 4 x 100 meters (Lum, Ava Goertzen, Jaidah McMaster and Ross), 4 x 400 meters (Emily Sassaman, Hannah Scherer, Rowan Lochner-Fehl and Goertzen) and 4 x 800 meters (Grace Powers, Mia Verheyn, Sassaman and Scherer).
Ava Goertzen authored a personal-record time of 12.96 seconds in the 100-meter dash and finished seventh.
