Students and teachers try land surveying holding compasses out behind Queensbury Middle School.

Queensbury sixth graders got a lesson in land surveying on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when Jim Thew of Thew Associates and Gordon Matson of Colliers Engineering visited the middle school science classes.

Science teachers Kristen Murphy and Kevin Middleton connected with the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors to connect with these industry experts, who showed the students how to use a compass and survey land behind the middle school.

“Our main goal this school year is to encourage students to ask questions, stay curious, and act as real investigators of science,” Murphy said. “For our unit on mapping, we wanted students to see that there is so much more to maps than what appears on paper. Our aim is to bridge classroom learning with real-world applications and show students how an interest in geography and science can lead to exciting, tangible careers.”
