Inspired by Sy Montgomery’s memoir, “How to Be a Good Creature,” 11th-grade English students at Queensbury High School have turned their personal stories about animals into a class book, “How to Be Good Creatures.”
Now, they’re putting their words to work for a good cause, offering copies of their book in exchange for donations to Lucky Puppy Rescue, a nonprofit adoption center in Argyle, where students are volunteering their time.
The stories are all written by Queensbury students, and the cover photo is by local photographer and QHS grad Autumn Collignon. The project gives students a chance to combine creative writing with community outreach and support an organization dedicated to helping animals.
“We wanted kids to learn to use their writing as outreach for a good cause,” said English teacher Kerri Bundy, who teaches the class alongside teacher Jonathan Favata and student teacher Grace Cupp.
Bundy reached out to Sy Montgomery, who is now posting updates on the project on her website.
“She is very touched to have students using their writing to help animals,” Bundy said.
